(avg rating of 173 recs) Write a recommendationMy 3 sibling and I attended Orkila in the late 70's early 80's. It was the best time of ALL our lives! Tracy and Rob were Islanders and I was in the regular camp session. It was back in the day when the pool was not heated and the barn was still owned by the local farmer. I am so grateful to have had the experience we had and can't wait to send my daughter!
My brother Wally and I spent 9 summers at Orkila in the 70's & 80's and to this day it remains my favorite place on earth. The values that were instilled in me at home and at camp have stayed with me through out life. I learned I can do anything I set my mind to and that was a great foundation to lay for a girl in the 70's I can not tell you that satisfaction and sense of accomplishment I felt canoeing up to Satellite, Jones, and Patoes Islands and an Islander. Thank you Mike (Sugar), Sharon, and Steve Spaulding for mentoring me as a youth.

Great community, great people and fun people !!! I love the place.
I spent six fun summers at Camp Orkila programs and had the time of my life, I just couldn't stop going back. They have amazing programs like the low ropes course, the high ropes, the giant swings, the rag program (which encourages campers to make goals and achieve them in the upcoming year), and I'm sure more amazing additions since I have become too old to attend.
Orkila is in one of the most picturesque places in Washington.
It's the best place on Earth. Pure magic.
Great Staff, great surroundings, great organization.
great setting, activities and staff!
rustic peaceful far from the city very clean good food good fun good exercise
Instills values central to the YMCA. Provides a safe environment and promotes healthy emotional, social and physical growth of children. Have watched our son grow in confidence, in social skills and in his love of the outdoors during his ten years of involvement with Orkilla. The leadership camps have been influential in his life outside of camp and have lead to a committment to working with youth in the YMCA, church and sports programs.
It has been a major factor in my son's development. He has been attending since the 3rd grade. This summer will be his 10th year and his first as a staff member. He has gone through their leadership programs-LDI, CIT and OSI and it has a major impact on his value formation. It has expanded his friendships to beyond his school community and he knows kids all over the Puget Sound area as well as some who regularly attend Orkila from the Portland area. He once said to me, "I love Camp Orkila because you they give you 'credit' for just being a good person."
Camp Orkila truly shaped my life. It showed me the meaning of authentic caring relationships and respect for the outdoors and all it's creatures. The two most important skills Orkila taught me which I have used for important events throughout my life were the value of goal setting through it's "Ragger Program," and values clarification which allowed us kids the freedom to explore God and what my questions were about Him and about life in general. I would not be as good of a person without my Orkila experiences!
Orkila is an amazing place, both physically and community-wise. I grew up at Orkila, as a camper, a counselor, and eventually a director. The values instilled in campers, the activities that are offered, and the community that is built because such a home-away-from-home for me that I can't imagine spending summer in a better place, even five years after my last summer at camp.
Best experiences, best people, amazing views and enviroment. Sunny days, camp life, memories...
I have spent the last 9 summers at Camp Orkila and would not have had it any other way. Going from camper and admiring all of my counselors and then growing to counselor age, Camp Orkila has taught me many life lessons. The best part of camp are the people you meet as camper and cousnelor. I have made life long friends there even though me may only see eachother as little as once a year, sometimes even less. The great experience of working with fellow counselors from all over the world in a beautiful and of course, fun filled setting is an experience which is hard to find. But besides being a kid all summer, the best part is the scenery. The beautiful sunsets can amaze anyone. It is rare to be able to experience the great outdoor anymore, but at Camp Orkila it gives children the opportunity to explore and enjoy nature to its fullest. Whether it is mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, walking on the beach, or playing life and death in the forest, camp teaches people of all ages our responsibility to respect and appreciate the outdoors.
Great staff, amazing setting, tons of activities, good food, kids have fun and learn important life lessons and values.
Orkila is a magical place for young people to learn about nature, meet new friends, and have lots of fun!
A spectacular setting in the San Juans, well-run and staffed for generations!! they have camps for kids, for families, for women, etc, throughout the year. My kids and husband watched a spider eat a fish while participating in the Y guides program.
The beach, the farm, and the people. I've never been to a place where thay care so much about kids!
It is one of the most beautiful places in the Northwest. The Y staff is wonderful! It is a very unique experience and I think everyone should experience it.
