Nominated for: BEST Museum BEST Fun Place for Kids
Founded in 1941, the Whatcom Museum features permanent and rotating exhibitions of fine art, regional history and hands-on children's art activities. The Museum's collection includes an extensive Photo Archives with more than 150,000 images pertaining to the history of the Pacific Northwest by such highly respected photographers as Darius Kinsey, J. Wilbur Sandison, Jack Carver and many others. Permanent educational exhibits highlight cultural and natural artifacts tracing the history of Whatcom County since the mid-1800s. Each summer the Museum hosts weekly Bellingham Bay History Cruises narrated by Museum Curator of Education Richard Vanderway. The 2½ hour sunset cruise explores the history of Bellingham as it was originally viewed — from the shoreline. The Museum is in the process of constructing a modern new building to showcase art and history exhibits that also will include a wonderful all-ages interactive gallery to replace its former children's museum.
