Nominated for: BEST Sandwich Shop
Founded in 1969 by Bernard "Sal" Salwitz and his son, Greg, Sal's was a family operation fron the start. With his wife, Betty, Salwitz raised his youngest two boys, David and Ricky, at the deli, where they learned the fine arts of busing tables and emptying the trash. Jim Hughes bought into the deli in 1980 and he and Salwitz were partners for the next eight years. "Never an argument, not one." Hughes says. "He wanted to retire at some point, and I wanted the deli, so it was beneficial for both of us. He was just a great guy, and I was sorry to see him go when the time came." Following Salwitz's example, Hughes also raised his two boys (Alex and Ken) at the deli. He kept a few boxes of cold cereal and a small TV there so the boys could accompany him before school while he baked for the day. After school Hughes' sons would help with clean up and prep work for the next day.
It's always been about family." Hughes says. "I've had a half a dozen nieces work for me over the years. Some started at 13 or 14 just because they liked being here. My boys' godmother even worked here for a while, and both of her boys did, too. My sister Peg was here for close to 24 years."
