Sake Nomi does the best job in town of presenting the wide range of sake available today. They always have fun things happening and they always have the best sake. It is a great atmosphere. They care about having sake from all of the regions of Japan. If you are interested in learning about sake, or if you already know and are looking to expand your knowledge, Sake Nomi is the place to go.
Sake Nomi is an awesome store run be wonderful people! I live in Los Angeles and stumbled across Sake Nomi's website over a year ago. I've been to Seattle 3 times since then and I make it a point to stop in to see Johnnie every time. My last trip I went there straight from the airport en route to dinner. With each visit not only do I get to enjoy fantastic new sake while building upon my knowledge of all things sake but I also get to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere the shop provides with friends.
I am so thankful that we discovered Sake Nomi when we moved to Seattle -- it is hands-down our favorite hang-out. Whether you like sake or [think] you don't, this welcoming and fun place should be on your list to try. I didn't know much about sake when I started going there, but the owners are so generous with their knowledge that now I can easily find my way around a sake menu and even order for friends. Their set-up makes great sense: they change the bar menu every week, and $5 gets you a tasting of all eight sake -- but it gets better -- they refund your $5 if you order a glass or a bottle. So it's as low-risk as could possibly be... a novice can try before buying, learn a great deal, and hopefully (like us) discover a whole new world of incredible tastes. The atmosphere is quite enjoyable: great music, fun games, movies -- and the people we have met there are among the best company we've made in Seattle. I can't wait until they can ship sake, so that I can introduce all my non-Seattle friends to my favorites.
Sake Nomi is a first class example of the kind of small business that makes our city so special. I would encourage anyone who has been curious about Sake to go in and try one of the "flights" of sake that Johnnie will welcome you with (for a small fee). Often they will be hosting free tastings as well and you can have a chance to try something that you woudn't otherwise. I went in not knowing what to expect and came out armed with a few bottles of excellent sake to share with my friends. Check this place out if you haven't already, you won't be sorry.
Spending time at Sake Nomi is always a special treat, from the premium sake selections to the wonderful conversations. There is always something happening at Sake Nomi, Taiko and Johnnie are very innovative with marketing the place and as a result come up with some great event ideas. And the Sake! Hands down, it's the best around. If you haven't visited their store you are surely missing out.
We are very fortunate to have a shop like Sake Nomi in Seattle. They carry an excellent selection of premium sake. This is now my preferred beverage over wine or liquor. If you have never tried fine sake or if you may have only tried poor quality (hot) sake, head down to Sake Nomi and enter a world of fine premium Japanese sake. Since there is a tasting bar you can try before you buy. And if you are new to sake, Johnnie (or Taiko) can answer all of you questions in a fun and friendly atmosphere.
I now drink (chilled) sake with all kinds of food, not just sushi. Try it!
PS - I agree with the other comments below!
Sake Nomi is a one-of-a-kind shop with the nicest owners you will ever meet! Even if you don't know much about Sake (like me) you should still stop by and enjoy a tasting of the latest and greatest. It will make for a unique, enjoyable experience that you can't really get anywhere else in Seattle!
What a great place! For sake experts as well as sake rookies. The owners are very knowledgeable and friendly of course. It's a very casual atmosphere, relaxing and fun.
Sake Nomi is one of the best places for drinking Sake. They may have a wider selection in NY, SF, or LA but the unpretentious down to earth attitude of the staff really makes this a special place. They are always willing to educate and share information, take recommendations and try new things. They have several major events every year along with classes and smaller gatherings scattered throughout the year at more regular intervals. I really appreciate having Sake Nomi as my local sake shop.
Sake Nomi is a great time all the time, but there is a lot of depth here. The sake-food pairing events with local restaurants were wonderful. There was the big tasting event with several breweries represented and representatives from the US and Japan are stopping by all the time. John Gauntner the well known author of several books about sake stops by from time to time as well, answers questions and helps serve up some of his favorites. This month, I'm looking forward to the sake chocolate pairing event.
Add to all that samurai movies, anime, sumo, and Wii bowling nights and you've got quite the package.
Sake Nomi is without a doubt the finest bar in Seattle. It's low key, and has an excellent menu of imported Japanese sake. Owner Johnnie Stroud's taste in blues, reggae and jazz is quite refined, and the people that frequent the place are friendly and sophisticated. The wide screen television serves up sake instructionals, sumo mahem and the occasional Wii bowling tournament. On the infrequent occasions when Johnnie's wife Taiko shows up, you are treated to her excellent, dry sense of humor, which goes well with their excellent dry sake. You can't go wrong at Sake Nomi.
Saké Nomi is a one of a kind place.
Warm and friendly, with great proprietors, the tasting bar is a great place to learn one's way around saké and develop an appreciation for what a wide range of flavors and styles the beverage offers. After one's identified one's drink preferences, or enjoyed movie night or Wii Wednesday, the selection of bottles on hand is terrific.
Everybody should drop in and meet Johnnie and Taiko!
Don't let your saké ignorance stand in the way of thus treat! Johnnie, the proprietor, spent several years in Japan getting acquainted with the saké microbrews specifically so you don't have to. Every week he has a fresh list of pours from which you can taste. During the tasting he'll educate you on the grades of saké and the milling process so you know exactly what you're sipping. Once you've figured out what you like, you can order a pour or ask Johnnie to direct you to just the right bottle to take home for the evening.
Sounds great, right? Saké Nomi hosts several events. There's a standing Wii Wednesday where you can enjoy a pour while taking on 100-pin bowling. Or Sundays when you can have a few rounds while enjoying some Japan-themed film (however loosely). Sign up for the newsletter so you're not left out of the loop!
