Voting Home / Northwest Harvest
Nominated for: BEST Favorite Local Charity
The mission of Northwest Harvest is to provide nutritious food to hungry people statewide in a manner that respects their dignity, while fighting to eliminate hunger.
Northwest Harvest is a nonprofit agency fighting hunger in Washington. We:
•Distribute food across the entire state. Last year, Northwest Harvest distributed more than 26 million pounds of food—the equivalent of 1.7 million meals every month—to a network of more than 350 hunger relief programs.
•Ask that our food be given out without restriction.
•Run the busiest food bank in Washington, serving more than 5,000 people each week at our Cherry Street Food Bank in downtown Seattle.
•Collaborate on championing long-term solutions to hunger and poverty.
One in six people in Washington struggle with hunger according to the USDA which currently ranks us the 14th hungriest state in the country. Budget cuts and high unemployment mean that more people are visiting food banks, often in greater need and many for the first time. You can help by donating, volunteering or learning more about hunger.
Since 1967, we’ve relied on you, the community, for funding and volunteers. Last year more than 92,000 volunteer hours were donated, the equivalent of 44 full time employees.
I am part of a youth organization that works with this charity every year. We raise thousands. Last summer we talked to one of their spokespersons who was speechless when she heard the amount. You could tell that they people who are part of this charity really care about what they do and getting food into food banks.
