Nominated for: BEST Winery
Matthews Estate is located on an eight-acre estate in Woodinville, Washington, just twenty minutes northeast of the city of Seattle. This is not only the home of our current winemaking facility and tasting room but also the future location of our state of the art, underground cave system which will provide a larger space for temperature and humidity controlled barrel storage, allowing us to use the existing facility for crushing and storage. The new addition will also be the home of an expanded tasting room, private dining room and a wine library.
Matthews Estate is dedicated to maintaining production of highly rated, Washington State grown, Cabernet Sauvignon dominated red wines, incorporating traditional Bordeaux varietal grapes grown in the Yakima and Columbia Valley. The percentages of varietals used in the wines, beside Cabernet Sauvignon, may vary each year, depending on the fruit selected by winemaker Aryn Morell, sourcing fruit from the best winegrowers and vineyards in the state. In addition to the flagship “Red Wine”, Matthews Estate also produces Claret, a “declassified” version of the premium Bordeaux style blend, a wine that consistently receives accolades from the public and wine connoisseurs alike. Depending on the fruit yield from year to year, production of a Reserve wine, vineyard and varietal designate, such as Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and occasionally a late harvest dessert wine are also made. The 2002 vintage of Matthews Red Wine was awarded 94 points by "Wine Enthusiast" magazine in 2005 as well as their #45 pick for top 100 wines in the world. The 2003 “Conner Lee” Vineyard Cabernet Franc Reserve was awarded 92 points, by Stephen Tanzer and 96 points by Robert Parker's “ Wine Advocate”: a testimony to the unbroken record of consistent quality achieved by Matthews wines.
