Kress IGA Supermarket is located 1423 Third Avenue in the basement level of the historic Kress Building at Third and Pike, which was once home to the S.H. Kress & Company department store for more than 50 years. The grocery store is accessible via twin escalator and staircase directly from Third Avenue.
Kress serves as a convenient shopping spot for downtown’s estimated 18,000 residents and 13,000 workers and pedestrians. Due to heavy foot-traffic, 40 percent of floor space is dedicated to grab-and-go prepared options, including hot food tables, a salad bar, and made-to-order sandwiches. Kress also offers organic produce, meat, baked goods and frozen food, along with the usual supermarket amenities. Kress is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. Kress IGA Supermarket is unique in its commitment to green practice: with its embrace of local vendors, low impact product packaging, and mix of recycled products in the remodel of its historic Kress Building location. Without parking, Kress encourages shoppers to buy only what they can carry and stocks its shelves with some product sizes to match. Plans for an environmentally-friendly vehicle to deliver groceries to condos and businesses in a limited area encompassing downtown, lower Queen Anne, South Lake Union and Pioneer Square are underway.
