I worked for a European Dessert shop for five years so I know something about pastries. King Donuts are the best I've had in recent memory. Everything is about their donuts right. They are light, tender, evenly browned and have just the right exterior crispness. They always taste fresh which means they use top quality cooking oil in their fryers and they change it often. I also like that the frostings and glazes aren't so sweet that they overpower my tastebuds: I can taste the fillings as well as the toasty caramelized flavor that comes from the browning process.
I've never seen their production line but I'm certain that they cook in small batches to ensure quality. Turning out donuts of such consistent quality takes a lot of attention to detail that would impossible in mass production setting.
Their teriyaki is just as impressive. I'm of Japanese descent so I was eating teriyaki before a lot of people had ever heard of it. I'm telling you this is good teriyaki. It's moist, tender, well seasoned and it has just the right smokey charred flavor. ("yaki" traditionally referred to things cooked over hot coals).
Yes the shop is a little off the beaten path but it's well worth a side trip. It's only a few minutes from Seward Park so reward yourself after a jog or power walk. Here's another idea. One of Seattle's best kept secrets is the Kubota Gardens. It's free and open to the public. Once inside you will find an expansive, elegant and authentic Japanese garden with many themes. There are cherry blossoms, koi ponds fed by bubbling brookes, arched bridges, stone lanterns, bamboo groves and even an authentic mountain garden complete with steep winding paths, beautiful bonsai pines and even a mini waterfall. It's only a few blocks from King Donuts. Invite a co-worker or two to grab teriyaki and donuts and have a lunch time get- away. Guys, if you've found yourself in your wife's or girlfriend's doghouse, plan a romantic picnic at the gardens, just remember to stop at King Donuts on the way.
