If you like those big, soft pretzels that cost way too much at the mall or fair, and especially if you haven't tried pretzel bread, you need to stop by Hess Bakery. I googled "pretzel bread" to help my wife with a recipe, and voila! eureka! oops, I mean bitteschön! - up popped Hess's, just down the road from us in Lakewood. We left with fresh-baked soft pretzel sticks (think large geoduck size and shape), yummy soft pretzels, and of course the buns we came in for. Of course they have a lot more to offer in the way of baked goods, sausages and other specialty meats, hard to find cheeses, and imported chocolates and candies. Unfortunately for me, we're trying to count calories, so I mostly just look wistful when we stop by. As an added bonus, the separately owned German cafe next door has great sandwiches and pastries to make the visit even more satisfying. You certainly don't need a German phrase book to fit in, but both places are also gathering spots for German speakers and other Europeans.
