Fort Nisqually Living History Museum

Category: Museum (40 listings)

Fort Nisqually is a living history museum where volunteers and staff, in period clothing, demonstrate the crafts of the 19th century and engage visitors in historic dialogue during the Living History Days and other events throughout the year. While on a trading expedition down the Sound last Spring with 8 or 9 men, I applied 12 days of our time to the erecting of a store-house 15 by 20...This is all the semblance of a settlement there is at this moment: But little as it is, it possesses an advantage over all the other settlements we have made on the Coast.

It makes history come alive. You can see, hear, smell, touch to understand history. Volunteers come from surrounding states and internationally to help make this the premier living history site in the Pacific Northwest.

They work hard at keeping everything authentic and giving the public a realistic view of a portion of life set back in the 1850's. Great Job!

Fort Nisqually is absolutely THE BEST fort around, next to Historic Fort Steilacoom in Lakewood. James Wiley, editor, "Pioneer and Democrat"

Fort Nisqually is the best family oriented museum. It is located on the lovely 5 Mile drive in Tacoma and proves again and again to be a great place to take the kids on a weekend afternoon.

I feel that a "living history" program is a very informative, hands-on approach to teaching our past. Fort Nisqually does this in an outstanding way.

Fort Nisqually is one place where you can step into a historically accurate environment without concession stands, neon or any evidence that you not in the mid-1800s. The ongoing demonstrations of work in a frontier settlement makes it seem you've stepped into the pages of history. A lot of people had to come together to produce the historically accurate living tableaux that are presented there. Though I haven't seen it yet, I hear that a new building is opening where trasitional crafts will be taught to the public.

Fort Nisqually is more than just a museum. It is an experience! The events they hold throughout the year really give you a feel for what life was like in the 1850's in the Pacific Northwest. The people who work and volunteer there have a genuine passion for history and sharing it with others. The educational opportunites are wonderful and look to be even better with the new buildings they have added this past year!

The Candlelight Tour at Fort Nisqually was awsome. It's like you were there in 1855.
