Since EMP opened in 2000 and SFM in 2004, EMP|SFM has welcomed more than 4 million visitors through its doors. From its museum planning stages in 1998 through 2007, EMP|SFM has been a key economic driver among Seattle nonprofit arts and culture organizations, with combined EMP|SFM institutional expenditures and EMP|SFM audience-member spending resulting in $580 million dollars of local economic impact. EMP|SFM is housed in a 140,000 square foot Frank O. Gehry-designed building. The best place to take teenagers! They could spend the entire day there, not get in trouble and be tired when they get home.

Because they have a fine collection of SF items even by my standards - well worth the walk and the time to see it.

They have a great variety and interesting displays. They utilize technology well to add to the experience. I really enjoy watching a couple of the living history interviews each time I'm there. They also have lots of events so it is not just stagnant displays. And the most amazing part to me: they brought us the Wonderful World of Jim Henson if only for a summer. I miss it already but it will be fun to see what they bring in next.

The EMP structure catches your eye because it's so colorful and oddly-shaped. Inside, you find everything a music lover could want. There are things for the whole family to enjoy! You even get to try your hand at playing a variety of musical instruments or record your own album! Also, for only $75 you can get a membership for your whole family for the entire YEAR. This membership comes with freebies, like CDs or shirts (one yr. we received a gorgeous coffee table book on music history with our membership). You also get guest passes so that you can bring along friends at no additional cost. The place is amazing. There are "visiting" exhibits (limited time) such as the exhibit of DISNEY memorabilia and there were even interactive movies you could add sound effects to. Recently we went during the JIM HENSON exhibit and it featured actual muppets used in the shows, such as Ernie & Bert. The kids were able to take part in a muppet ROCK SHOW by operating muppets modeled after famed Seattle area musicians, such as Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain. I would HIGHLY recommend the EMP to anyone and everyone. It's one place where you get WAAAAAAAYYYYYYY more than what you pay for!
