There is no comparison to the Cougar Mountain Zoo. The staff are exceptional, and truly dedicated to the well being of all mammal and bird species. It is with tremendous gratitude for their dedication to endangered species; recognition and respect lent for the true nature of all species residing at the zoo, if not flourishing therein, that this recommendation is made.
The residents of this zoo could never be described as mere specimens of a collection. Staff members embrace state-of-the art technologies in care for these species. They study, invest in professional development, even vacations to help raise awareness for endangered species.
The zoo residents enjoy top of the line care, enrichments, and live in habitats that allow them to exercise their true natures. Treated with immense love, the many species living at this zoo are most respected for their natural role in their native environments.
A teaching zoo: a zoo for our fellow humans to learn how to live with the declining numbers of beautiful species that this earth has offered. This is a zoo committed to educating their diverse visitors (and I do mean visitors from across the globe) on the care of these fantastic mammals and birds.
There is not a day that one visits--a very committed member here--that you do not hear a guest speak to this zoo's welcoming, educational, friendly, and clean spaces. More than this, you can revel in the amazement of children and adults as they see, first hand, some of the power and true nature of the species within.
The Cougar Mountain Zoo offers exceptional enrichments for humans too! Beyond this, visitors interact with Zoo Keepers, the Curator, Docents, the Educational Coordinator and the Zoo Treasures Gift Shop Guru. Visitors are welcomed by professionals, interns and volunteers alike.
Of course, there's the Reindeer Festival. Beyond this, both humans, cougars and tigers can celebrate birthdays. There's a Tiger Tunnel. A photographer's tour. A Celebration House. And my personal favorite...Tiger Bedtime. Now that's something you have to see to believe.
I won't lead you astray...I love this zoo and ALL of the people who work there; especially heartening are the volunteers, interns and cherished members. Personally, I have been volunteering since 2009.
Each and every mammal and bird has a name, personality, quirks and fans. Just check out Molu the Cockatoo on FaceBook! If you ask me, Walter the Emu is fantastic! Sirsa, the Sarus Crane...amazing. Bagheera...well, Baggy, Chuffers...any name that he may go by...he's just fan-tab-ulous. And then there's Orion.... Well, I'm pretty much hooked on them all.
When I volunteer, my favorite moments are seeing children and adults stare in wonder or cry in amazement (and yes, this happened just this past Saturday).
Between the brilliant minds from Curator, to Zoo Keepers, to Education and the Zoo Treasure Gift Shop, you can find pieces of art created by Tigers as mere cubs and Macaws! Oopsy, I forgot Molu. And I could never leave out the exquisite art drawn by one of their own Zoo Keepers.
As you may guess, from my first visit I was hooked. My story is probably much like yours...I drove by the Zoo sign for years and visited on a whim. I asked someone, as a Workforce Development Professional, 'how great would it be to work here?' It turns out, you can volunteer/ I've never turned back.
I give this recommendation freely and without consultation with the wonderful zoo staff. Truly, this is one of the BEST northwest escapes. What will your Family, Friends and Loved Ones find at the Cougar Mountain Zoo?
