Chatting with Alicia Nickerson of Maxwell Salon

This is Nominee Spotlights, a series in which the Best of Western Washington chats with local business owners to get the inside scoop on everything good.

Maxwell Salon has only been open for three months, but the Silverdale salon is already making a name for itself. Owner, Alicia Nickerson teamed up with her husband, Brent, to design and build the salon almost entirely themselves. Alicia handled the layout while Brent worked on the flooring, drywall and cabinetry. We were lucky enough to get a few minutes with one half of the team, as Alicia gave us the scoop on her new salon.

What has been your biggest surprise about opening a salon? Honestly, I'm surprised that it hasn't been as difficult as I anticipated it being. It still has its challenges, but the people I've chosen to work in the salon have been everything I could have hoped for and more.

How would you describe your clientele? We see all ages and genders! When choosing the design and decor for the salon, I wanted to appeal to both women and men, old and young. Based on feedback from clients, I think I accomplished that.

Do you have a personal favorite cut and/or color? I know the inverted bob has been popular for quite sometime now, and maybe a little bit old news to some, but it's still one of my favorites because of its ability to flatter most face shapes and the versatility of the cut in regard to styling.

Is there a popular hair style or trend that all of your clients are asking for? It's all about Ombre right now! For those not familiar, it's the look you're seeing on celebrities right now; the hair is darker at the top and transitions to lighter on the ends.

How would you describe the salon vibe? Friendly, comfortable, modern, with a dash of glamour.

Do you host special events in the evening that your clients can attend? We've just opened in July, but we have plans in the works to host some group specific events such as Ladies Nights, Styling 101, and possibly a good ol' fashion Wine and Jazz night.

What was the craziest cut or color one of your clients asked for? We recently had someone come in to have the back of his hair shaped into sunglasses and a mustache. It basically looked like a face on the back of his head! You can find pictures it on our Facebook page. The haircut was done by Tiffany Weber.
