Cupcake shops are popping up all over Western Washington and I couldn't be happier. I'd rather have a cupcake over a slice of cake any day. Why? Because I have a problem with portion control when it comes to desserts and cupcakes solve that problem for me. Not that I stop at eating just one or anything, but that's not portion control, that's um, well, a gluttony problem. Besides, it's impossible not to be happy and feel like a kid while eating a cupcake.
One of my favorite weekend activities (yes, I actually consider this an activity) is to go cupcaking. Hopping from one cupcake shop to another from Bellingham to Vancouver, I've had the sweet pleasure of sampling some super yummy cupcakes around the Sound. Here are my Top 5 Favorite Cupcake Shops in Western Washington based on:
Did you know I love chocolate? Well I do. That means I'm pretty particular about chocolate - especially chocolate cupcakes. So when you name a cupcake Triple Threat, you better deliver, baby. Cupcake Royale does and they've been doing it since 2003. The first cupcake shop in the Seattle area, they also offer ice cream and will even make you a cupcake shake. Genius.
It's a chocolate throwdown. Trophy's Cupcakes Triple Chocolate will bring any chocolate lover to their knees. A religious experience I'm telling you, and they have so many flavors like Strawberry Lemonade and this month's Bananas Foster that are super delish too. Martha Stewart herself even gave Trophy's a thumbs up and she knows "a good thing" when she tastes it.
What I love about this shop is that it has so many adorable holiday cupcakes, and I'm all about cute food. Equally impressive is the New York Neapolitan cupcake. The chocolate, vanilla and strawberry cake layers were a fun surprise to bite into and actually made me squeal I was so giddy. The scrumptious strawberry frosting, sprinkles and cherry on top, just made this a happy little cupcake. Other flavors like Long Island Lemon and Strawberry Soho were not only refreshingly moist, but so darn cute.
Strawberry Cheesecake Cupcake. That's all you need to know. Actually, you need to know where to get them and that's Cake Envy, located across the street from Green Lake. This little beauty is made from local, natural and organic ingredients, so I consider it health food. Take your little walk or run around the lake and stop in for a healthy dose of this cupcake. If you think I'm persnickety about chocolate, I'm even more so about frosting. There are strawberry preserves blended into the cream cheese buttercream and I actually did something I've NEVER done before. I licked all of the frosting off of the cupcake first. It was THAT good. The cake was nice and moist and it's obvious the ingredients are top notch. With a great variety of choices like Green Tea and Almond Joyce cupcakes, Cake Envy is a perfect reward for a few loops around the lake.
Bite Me. Yeah, that's right, Bite Me's Chocolate Mint cupcake is my choice for Best of Western Washington. Let me walk you through this. The chocolate cake was so moist because they mixed 3 different kinds of melted chocolate into the batter. The frosting to cake ratio was perfect and the mint was just right and not overpowering. Another thing I appreciated was that the frosting was not too sweet. These cupcakes are made old school, baked with the freshest ingredients. A cupcake like this takes time and it shows. You will find me trekking to Everett in mid-November and mid-February when it has been raining sideways for weeks in Western Washington, just so I can shovel one of these cuppies in me to get some comfort. These are feel better, everything is right in the world cupcakes.
Honorable Mention Katie's Cupcakes, Yellow Leaf Cupcakes
All of the cupcakes I listed in my Top 5 Favorites were amazing and baked fresh daily. It was hard to choose one over the other since they were all so good. An added bonus is that every one of these shops had great customer service. While cupcaking around the Sound I probably ate my weight in frosting alone, but I had a totally sweet time doing it.
Now does anyone know where I can get some pajama jeans?
